Overview

Nature walks (also called bush walks, guided walking safaris, or nature trails) offer one of the most intimate and thrilling ways to experience Botswana's wilderness. Unlike vehicle-based game drives, walking safaris let you slow down, feel the ground underfoot, and focus on the smaller details—animal tracks, plants, insects, bird calls, medicinal uses of flora, and the subtle signs of wildlife presence. With a highly trained professional guide (armed for safety) and often a tracker, these walks emphasize education, awareness, and respect for the environment.

In Botswana's vast, low-density parks and concessions, walking safaris are limited to specific areas (often private concessions rather than core national parks) due to strict wildlife regulations for safety and conservation. They're not as widespread as in places like Zambia or Zimbabwe, but when available, they're exceptional—especially in the dry season for clearer visibility and easier terrain.

Where Nature Walks Are Possible in Our Operating Areas
As a Maun-based mobile safari operator, Renns Excursions can arrange guided nature walks in suitable zones (primarily through private concessions or permitted areas adjacent to national parks). Key spots include:

  • Moremi Game Reserve / Okavango Delta fringes (e.g., Khwai or Xakanaxa areas): Excellent for bush walks in community concessions or private concessions bordering Moremi. Spot tracks of big cats, learn about Delta plants, and possibly encounter antelope or elephant herds on foot. High chance for birding and small mammal sightings.
  • Chobe National Park (limited): Guided bush walks are available in some sections (e.g., near Kasane or private concessions), focusing on riverine habitats, elephant signs, and smaller wildlife.
  • Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR): Remote and arid—ideal for tracking Kalahari lions, meerkats, or gemsbok on foot in select areas with expert guides reading the desert landscape.
  • Nxai Pan & Makgadikgadi Pans: In the dry season, walks on the vast pans offer a unique lunar-like experience (e.g., near Baines' Baobabs or meerkat colonies). In wet season (like now), greener grasslands allow for migration tracking on foot.
  • Private concessions (common in northern Botswana): These often permit walking safaris alongside mobile camping—perfect for our private, flexible setups.
