Overview

Mokoro excursions are one of the most iconic and serene ways to experience the Okavango Delta—gliding silently through narrow channels, reed beds, and lily-covered lagoons in a traditional dugout canoe (mokoro), poled by skilled local guides from communities like the Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust (OKMCT). This low-impact, eco-friendly activity lets you get incredibly close to nature without engine noise disturbing wildlife—perfect for spotting birds, aquatic antelope like sitatunga or red lechwe, hippos, crocodiles, and even elephants or lions on the banks.

As a Maun-based operator, Renns Excursions partners with local polers through OKMCT to offer authentic, community-supported mokoro trips—emphasizing sustainable tourism and direct benefits to Botswana's people.

Why Mokoro Excursions Are Magical
Silent immersion: The mokoro moves quietly, allowing close encounters—hear birdsong, watch fish jump, or spot a Pel's fishing owl without scaring anything away.
Wildlife from water level: Unique views of hippos yawning nearby, elephants crossing channels, or lechwe leaping through reeds.
Birdwatching paradise: Over 500 species thrive here—kingfishers, herons, jacanas, wattled cranes, and more.
Cultural connection: Your poler shares knowledge of the Delta, traditional navigation, and local life.
